Research shows that the US has increased solar generation 3000% in 10 years!

A new report, produced by the Environment America Research & Policy Center and entitled “Renewables on the Rise 2020,” has found that the US produces 30-times as much solar energy in 2019 as it did in 2010. Now that’s a trend we can get behind!

The report actually documents the developments within several of the clean energy industries over the past 10 years: solar, wind, battery storage, energy efficiency and electric vehicles.

A key factor in the growth in renewable energy utilisation has been the adoption of battery storage, with improved technology and reduced smart battery cost seeing a 20-fold increase since 2010. Even further benefit comes in the fact that energy consumption per person has actually declined in the US over the past decade thanks to increased energy efficiency, including more than one million electric vehicles on US roads.

Susan Rakov, the current chair of Environment America Research and Policy Center’s Clean Energy program, shared: “People have always reaped the benefits of sun and wind, first to grow food, then to move ships…and now, to power the 21st century. Today, nearly 50 million American homes rely on clean, renewable energy from the sun and wind. These technologies have risen to the occasion. They are transforming our energy landscape, and our future.”

Emma Searson, Director of the 100% Renewable Campaign with Environment America Research & Policy Center, added: “America’s growth in clean energy is primarily the result of states taking action. Forward looking policies designed to tap into each state’s vast renewable resources are creating a virtuous cycle of technological advancements, falling costs and greater deployment. Renewables continue to beat all expectations. In the decade ahead, we have an opportunity to reimagine our energy future with these technologies front and center.”

While the current US administration has been mixed on its commitment towards climate initiatives, it seems that the country as a whole sees definite value in solar, even if it is in financial terms as much as environmental. With influential and economically powerful states such as California and Texas leading the way in increasing solar capacity, it seems like there’s plenty more to come.

This opinion was echoed by Searson, who has also said “Renewable energy sources continue to beat all expectations. In the decade ahead, we have an opportunity to reimagine our energy future, with these technologies being front and center.”
