Amazon Tilbury unveils largest solar rooftop of any Amazon site in Europe

Amazon is increasing its commitment towards renewable energy, with the latest notable step being that its fulfilment centre in Tilbury has this week unveiled the largest rooftop solar installation of any Amazon site in Europe. Management at Amazon hope that it will be another step in their mission towards being entirely powered - yes, we mean 100% - by renewable energy before the end of 2025. 

The centre - with floor space roughly equivalent to 28 football pitches, or around two million square ft - now has more than 11,500 module solar panels on its roof, with the panels estimated to generate solar power that is roughly equivalent to the electricity needed to power 700 homes for a year.


Brittany Stanton, a senior energy programme manager for Amazon, said: “Here at Amazon, we are putting our scale and our inventive culture to work on sustainability and protecting the environment. We are proud of the fact that Amazon has a goal to power our global infrastructure using 100 per cent renewable energy, and this solar panel installation is just one of the ways we are working to make our fulfilment centre network sustainable.”

“To achieve 100% renewable energy by 2025 we will invest in large on-site solar installations like this one in Tilbury which will help power our fulfilment centres, in large off-site renewable energy projects where power goes into our local utility grids. We’re investing in renewable energy projects  because it’s good for the environment, communities and for business. That’s why we co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019, outlining our commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040 – 10 years in advance of the Paris Climate Agreement.”


While there are no doubt certain questions to be raised over some of Amazon’s working practices, it has to be said that they really are setting the standard when it comes to implementing renewable energy processes across the board, something we have to commend them for.

New solar project in Texas is Nestle's largest investment in renewable energy

  If there’s one thing we know about Texas, it’s that it’s huge. If there’s another thing we know, it’s that it gets its fair share of sunshine. With that in mind, it makes it the perfect place for a large-scale solar project, which is exactly what Nestle are in the process of doing, a project that will prove to be their largest renewable energy investment to date. The solar project, which will cover around 2,000 acres, is making use of NextTracker components, Power Electronics’ Freesun HEM inverters and in the region of 855,000 Jinko Solar modules. The project, named Taygete I, has generated more than 300 jobs during peak construction. Scottish Water begin their first solar storage project

Today we bring exciting news that Scottish Water, after 46 solar projects and 20 wind power projects, has unveiled plans for its first combined solar power and battery storage facility.  The £2 million project will be located close to Perth’s Waste Water Treatment Works on the River Tay and will be the largest single solar energy investment ever for the publicly-owned water company’s commercial subsidiary, Scottish Water Horizons. The project will see just over 2,500 solar panels installed on land close to the treatment works, with the two areas having a combined generation capacity of just over 1MW. Crucially it will be the first Scottish Water solar project that will also include battery storage, with the presence of four vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) that will offer the potential for storing up to 0.8MWh of energy.  The addition of battery storage to this site should allow for around 95% of the renewable energy that is generated to be used directly on the site.
