Are solar panels right for you?

 As more and more households around the UK add solar panels to their homes in pursuit of both the financial savings and environmental benefits of solar energy, now could be the time to look at whether solar panels are right for you. With this in mind, we thought we’d take a short look at some of the key features of solar panels to help inform you on whether they could be the right option for your home.


Energy generation


The first, and in many ways most important, feature of solar panels is in their ability to generate solar energy. There are often misunderstandings in this area with regards to how and when the solar panels can generate energy for use in your home, for example many people think that it is only in direct bright sunlight that such energy can be generated.


This is by no means true, as solar panels only really need daylight to generate solar energy. While it is true that in the summer months solar panels will tend to generate more energy, this is just as much down to the greater number of daylight hours as it is the possibility of a sunny day.


In terms of the amount of energy generated, it will vary from day to day and season to season, but many solar providers suggest that on average you could save up to 50% on your annual energy bills when averaged across a year, particularly when your solar panels are combined with a solar battery.


Financial savings


While there are undoubtedly some key environmental benefits to reducing your energy intake from traditional energy sources, the main attraction for many homeowners is in how these energy bill reductions translate into financial savings. 


While it is difficult to put exact number estimates on what you will save - this will of course depend on how much solar energy you generate and use in place of standard electricity - it is fair to say that your savings should translate into a few hundred pounds a year.


Visual impact


In terms of the visual impact of solar panels, it is true that in previous years, many of the options were far from the most attractive accessories to your home and at times could be a real eyesore!


That said, in recent years design quality has come a long way, and solar panels can now often be matched pretty seamlessly to the appearance of your roof and actually end up looking fairly good in many cases.

Huge solar farm proposed near Darlington to help UK meet renewable energy target

As we scanned the solar industry news, we were delighted to see exciting new plans revealed that would see the installation of a major new solar farm on a 420,000sq.m site near Darlington. Darlington Borough Council has been asked for planning guidance with regards to a new solar project on land just east of Aycliffe Village. The proposed solar farm could have an export capacity of up to 31 Megawatts – which would be enough to power in the region of 10,000 average homes! The Solar Trade Association has welcomed the news, reminding the public that the UK needs to continue to increase its solar generation considerably if it is to meet its 15% renewable energy target by the end of this year, or early next year at the very least. Scottish Water begin their first solar storage project

Today we bring exciting news that Scottish Water, after 46 solar projects and 20 wind power projects, has unveiled plans for its first combined solar power and battery storage facility.  The £2 million project will be located close to Perth’s Waste Water Treatment Works on the River Tay and will be the largest single solar energy investment ever for the publicly-owned water company’s commercial subsidiary, Scottish Water Horizons. The project will see just over 2,500 solar panels installed on land close to the treatment works, with the two areas having a combined generation capacity of just over 1MW. Crucially it will be the first Scottish Water solar project that will also include battery storage, with the presence of four vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) that will offer the potential for storing up to 0.8MWh of energy.  The addition of battery storage to this site should allow for around 95% of the renewable energy that is generated to be used directly on the site.
